Game Reports
Nate Bumstead and two Erie relievers combined
for a seven-hit shutout as the SeaWolves handed the Curve a 3-0
loss Saturday night in the second game of a four-game series at
Jerry Uht Park in downtown Erie
Erie (37-48), which entered the game with the Eastern League's
worst home record, won for just the third time in ten games against
Altoona at Uht Park this season
The loss dropped the Curve (50-36) to 2-3 on their current seven-game,
pre-All-Star Break road trip
Bumstead (6-6), who earlier in the week was named as a replacement
for Wednesday's E.L. All-Star Game at Blair County Ballpark, evened
his season record after tossing seven scoreless innings
The right-hander allowed four hits and four walks, while striking
out six batters
Mike Nannini and John Ennis kept the Curve off the board by each
working a scoreless inning of relief
Ennis pitched the ninth inning to collect his team-leading ninth
save
Curve starter Landon Jacobsen (8-7), who worked seven shutout
frames to earn the win in his previous start last Monday against
Akron, was tagged for ten hits and three runs in his six innings
of work to suffer the defeat
The loss spoiled Jacobsen's attempt to join Portland pitchers
Chris Smith and Kason Gabbard with a league-high nine wins
The SeaWolves innocently scored the only run they would need in
the bottom of the third when Kurt Airoso bounced into a double
play, which scored Brent Clevlen from third
They tacked on two more against Jacobsen in the sixth on a sacrifice
fly and a bases loaded infield single by Kelly Hunt
Dave Parrish was the only Curve hitter to record more than one
hit, going 2-for-3 after recording a perfect 3-for-3 game in Altoona's
5-4 victory Friday night
Second baseman Javier Guzman saw his team-high six-game hitting
streak come to an end after going hitless in four at-bats
The Curve and SeaWolves will play the third game of their four-game
set at Uht Park Sunday afternoon at 1.05pm
Left-hander Mike Connolly (6-3, 3.69) will take the mound for
Altoona for the first time since being sent down from Triple-A
Indianapolis earlier in the week
He will be opposed by Erie righty Virgil Vasquez (4-7, 4.06)
Nathan Bumstead and two relievers combined
on a seven-hitter as Erie blanked Altoona, 3-0, at Jerry Uht Park
on Saturday
Bumstead (6-6) allowed four hits, walked four and struck out six
over seven innings as he lowered his ERA from 4.06 to 3.78
Mike Nannini yielded one hit in the eighth before John Ennis gave
up a pair of hits and struck out two in the ninth for his ninth
save
The SeaWolves (37-48) staked Bumstead to a 1-0 lead in the third
Brent Clevlen and Dmitri Young hit consecutive singles off starter
Landon Jacobsen before Clevlen scored when Kurt Airoso grounded
into a double play
Young played left field and went 1-for-2 with a walk as he continued
a rehabilitation assignment
The Detroit Tigers designated hitter/first baseman has been on
the fifteen day disabled list since May 22 with a strained right
quadriceps
Don Kelly lifted a sacrifice fly and Kelly Hunt hit an RBI infield
single in the sixth to give Erie a 3-0 lead
Adam Haley went 2-for-2 with two walks as the SeaWolves won for
just the second time in seven games
Jacobsen (8-7), who was trying to become the third nine-game winner
in the Eastern League, surrendered three runs on ten hits and
three walks while striking out five in six innings
David Parrish, who went 3-for-3 on Friday, was 2-for-3 with a
walk as Altoona (50-36) had a two-game winning streak snapped
The SeaWolves broke a two-game skid on Saturday
night as they shut out the Altoona Curve 3-0
The SeaWolves struck for a run in the bottom of the third inning
Brent Clevlen and Dmitri Young connected on back-to-back singles
to start the inning
On the Young single, Clevlen reached third, putting runners at
the corners with no outs
Kurt Airoso followed by grounding into a 6-4-3 double play
On the play, Clevlen scored, giving the Wolves a 1-0 lead
Erie added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth
Airoso and Mike Rabelo each reached on base hits to start the
inning
With runners at first and third and no outs, Don Kelly sent a
sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored Airoso for a 2-0 SeaWolves
lead
With one out, Kody Kirkland singled and Adam Haley walked to load
the bases for Kelly Hunt
Hunt reached on an infield single that scored Rabelo to put Erie
on top 3-0
Nate Bumstead evened his record to 6-6 on the season picking up
the win
He went seven strong innings allowing only four hits
He walked four and struck out six
Mike Nannini worked a scoreless eighth for the Wolves allowing
one hit
John Ennis came into the game in the ninth, struck out two, and
picked up his ninth save
The shutout was the eighth of the season for Erie
Right-hander Nate Bumstead has that intangible
bulldog demeanor on the mound that managers and coaches love to
see
He brings an aggressive, hard-nosed approach to his pitching and
has earned a reputation as being someone who really competes well,
even on days when he doesn't have his best stuff or his command
Bumstead exhibited both on Saturday, throwing seven shutout innings
in Erie's 3-0 win over Altoona before 3,685 fans at Jerry Uht
Park
The SeaWolves (37-48) broke a two-game losing streak and backed
Bumstead with error-less ball
The win evened Bumstead's record at 6-6 and was his third victory
this season against the Curve, who are 9-4 against Erie
"I don't why I've had so much success against them because
they're a good-hitting club" Bumstead said
"I've had good fortune against them"
Bumstead, in his first season of Double-A ball, is not overpowering
and doesn't have many easy innings
But when he puts guys on base and gets into trouble, he shows
a tendency to overcome those obstacles with some of his best pitching
"I've always been that guy who gets his way out of trouble"
Bumstead said
"When I get a couple guys on, I really focus and start to
make better pitches
It's not something I try to do, it's kind of something that just
happens
It's nice because I do feel like I kind of have that gear that
I can go to and make the quality pitches that I made tonight"
Bumstead had a few more easy innings than usual in Saturday's
win
He struck out six, walked four and allowed just four hits
"On days when he doesn't have his best stuff, he finds a
way, he just battles and he usually makes good pitches when he
gets men on base" SeaWolves manager Duffy Dyer said
"He changes speeds so well and his delivery is very deceptive
I don't think a lot of hitters see the ball real well off him,
so even though he doesn't throw real hard, his fastball is fairly
effective and he has the other good off-speed pitches"
Bumstead is one of four Erie players selected to Wednesday's Eastern
League All-Star Game in Altoona
His selection to the All-Star Game materialized only after Erie
left-hander Bobby Jones was put on the disabled list and after
right-hander Preston Larrison declined because he had to return
home to take care of some personal business
"I was fortunate to be put in that spot to go to the All-Star
Game and tonight, I feel that maybe I do deserve it" Bumstead
said
"I threw a good game and hopefully I can carry that through
This was kind of what I needed
My last couple outings haven't gone so great"
Erie right-hander Mike Nannini threw a scoreless eighth and right-hander
John Ennis pitched a scoreless ninth
Detroit Tigers designated hitter Dmitri Young continued his four-game
rehabilitation assignment with Erie on Saturday
Young started in left field and played just five innings, going
1-for-2 with a single and a walk
In his first two games with Erie, he is 2-for-5 with two walks
and one RBI
Young has been on Detroit's disabled list since May 23 with a
strained right quadriceps muscle in his right leg
He will conclude his assignment with Erie on Monday and continue
his rehabilitation with Triple-A Toledo on Thursday
