Game Reports

Starter Matt Peterson (pictured) tossed six shutout innings,
but the Akron Aeros scored the game's only run in the bottom of the tenth inning to claim
a 1-0 win in the opening game of a three-game series Saturday night at Canal Park in Akron
Akron won its sixth straight game against Altoona to increase its first-place lead
over the Curve to five games in the E.L. South

Walk-off double propels Aeros past Curve in series opener

Jared Sandberg knocked in Ryan Mulhern from first base with a walk-off double in the bottom of the tenth inning as the Akron Aeros claimed a series-opening 1-0 win over the Altoona Curve Saturday night at Canal Park in Akron, OH

The loss drops the Curve (43-30) five full games behind the first-place Aeros (48-25), who have now won nineteen of their last twenty-three games and six in a row against Altoona

The Curve are now 2-6 in extra-inning games

Altoona starter Matt Peterson worked six scoreless innings and combined with Jorge Vasquez and Brandon Knight to keep the Aeros off the board in regulation, but the Curve offense failed to score against Akron left-handers Aaron Laffey and Juan Lara, sending the game into extra innings

Knight (0-3) surrendered the game-winning hit to Sandberg in the tenth to suffer his third extra-inning loss in the last twelve games

Lara (4-2) tossed two scoreless innings to earn the win for the Aeros, who have won nineteen of their last twenty-three games

Peterson, who had recorded a 7.85 ERA in his previous eleven starts, pitched in and out of trouble over the course of his six innings, but did not surrender a run
The right-hander stranded the bases loaded in the Akron first inning and left nine Aeros runners on base overall, including six in scoring position

The Curve's best chance to score came in the top of the seventh, when they loaded the bases against Laffey with two outs
However, Ray Sadler flied out to right to end the threat

Offensively, Altoona managed just five hits in the contest and no player posted more than one hit

Simon Pond collected a fifth-inning single to extend his hitting streak to eight games, while Craig Stansberry had his eight-game streak end after going 0-for-3 with a walk

The Curve will look to even the three-game set Sunday afternoon as they send right-hander Wardell Starling (0-0, 12.00) to the mound for his second start since being called up from Class-A Lynchburg earlier in the week
Akron will counter with righty Bear Bay (4-4, 3.74)

Game time is set for 2.05pm

Sandberg propels Aeros

Jared Sandberg ripped an RBI double in the bottom of the tenth inning to give Akron a 1-0 win over Altoona on Saturday at Canal Park

With one out in the innings, Ryan Mulhern lined a single to left field off Brandon Knight (0-3)
Shaun Larkin struck out, but Sandberg sent a drive to left for his eleventh double and Akron's nineteenth win in its last twenty-three games

Juan Valdes had two of the eight hits for the Aeros (48-25), who left twelve runners on base

Juan Lara (4-2) walked one and struck out three in two hitless innings for the win after a strong start by Aaron Laffey

Making his sixth outing since being promoted from Class A Advanced Kinston, Laffey allowed five hits, walked one and struck out two over eight innings

Curve starter Matt Peterson yielded four hits, walked five and struck out five in six innings before Jorge Vasquez gave up a hit, walked one and fanned four in two frames

Altoona's best scoring opportunity came in the seventh, when Craig Stansberry walked with one out
before Brett Roneberg doubled
After David Parrish grounded out, Simon Pond walked to load the bases
But Laffey retired Ray Sadler on a flyout

Pond singled in the fifth to extend his hitting streak to eight games while Stansberry had his eight-game hitting streak snapped for the Curve (43-30)

Curve fall farther in standings

The tenth inning continues to be unkind to Curve reliever Brandon Knight

For the second time in four days and third time in the last twelve games, Knight surrendered a walk-off RBI hit in the tenth inning
This time Akron got to him to post a 1-0 win at Canal Park on Saturday night

Altoona has lost six consecutive games against the Aeros and fell even farther behind first-place Akron in the Southern Division standings
The Curve now trail by five games

Just like in Knight’s (0-3) two other losses, the right-hander pitched a scoreless ninth before running into trouble in extra innings

Ryan Mulhern singled with one out in the tenth, and one out later, Jared Sandberg blasted a shot off the right-field wall to score Mulhern and end the game
Curve right fielder Ray Sadler chased the ball to the wall and attempted a leaping catch, but he could not corral the ball

Juan Lara (4-2) pitched two hitless innings of relief for the Aeros to pick up the win

The dramatic finish overshadowed brilliant performances by both starters

Akron’s Aaron Laffey suffocated the Altoona lineup all night, tossing eight scoreless innings and allowing just five hits and two walks

His Curve counterpart, Matt Peterson, was not as sharp and constantly had to work out of trouble, but he kept the Aeros off the scoreboard for six innings in his second consecutive strong start
The right-hander allowed four hits, walked five and hit a batter, but he also tied season highs with his six innings pitched and five strikeouts
Peterson allowed runners to advance into scoring position in all but one inning he pitched and squirmed out of jams in the first and fourth

In all, Akron stranded eleven runners, seven in scoring position

Altoona’s hitters didn’t enjoy much success against Laffey, who faced just one batter over the minimum in his first six innings of work

The Curve finally stirred in the seventh inning, loading the bases with two outs, but Sadler flied out to right to end the threat

Pirates Farm Report

Altoona (Double-A,43-30) lost, 1-0, in ten innings at Akron (Indians)

Giving up the run in the tenth and taking the loss was P Brandon Knight (0-3)

The team only managed to get five hits
The only extra base hit came from LF Brett Roneberg who got a double in the seventh

Double by newcomer lifts Aeros
Sandberg nearly hits homer in tenth inning

Jared Sandberg has twenty-five major-league home runs to his credit, not to mention his share of game-winning hits
So the pressure wasn't as intense when the Aeros newcomer made his way to the plate with two outs and a runner on base in extra innings Saturday night at Canal Park

After the Altoona Curve and Aeros went scoreless through nine innings, Sandberg just missed his first homer for the Aeros
He settled for a game-winning double that banged off the right-field wall and drove in Ryan Mulhern to give the Aeros a 1-0 victory in 10 innings

``Jared's certainly seen a lot and been in plenty of those kinds of situations before'' Aeros manager Tim Bogar said
``He knows how to handle it''

The 28-year-old Sandberg, who played three seasons with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays from 2001-03, said that providing veteran leadership and clutch hits would be part of his duties with the Aeros

``This roster has gone through quite a few changes the last few weeks'' he said
``It can take a toll on a team
I wanted to come in and help provide some stability''

Despite pitching eight scoreless innings, Aeros starter Aaron Laffey did not factor into the decision
Instead, reliever Juan Lara got his fourth win
