Curve win streak snapped as they fall to Harrisburg 5-4

The Altoona Curve had their six-game winning streak snapped Wednesday night, as they fell 5-4 to the Harrisburg Senators at Commerce Bank Park

With two on and one out in the bottom of the tenth, Senator left fielder Richard Lane smashed a long single over the head of Vic Buttler, allowing the winning run to score

The Curve had fought back from a 4-3 deficit in the eighth inning, courtesy of poor Harrisburg defense
With one out and two men on base, Simon Pond reached base on a Dan Dement fielding error allowing Craig Stansberry to score the tying run

Brandon Knight picked up the loss for the Curve, his second on the year

Knight had two big strikeouts to keep Harrisburg from scoring in the ninth but was unable to keep pace as the Senators finally won with one out in the tenth
Knight pitched 1-1/3 total innings allowing two hits while striking out three

Led by Ray Sadler’s fourth triple of the year in the fourth, the Curve built an early 3-0 lead, but were unable to hang on as Harrisburg scored three in the fourth and one in the fifth to take the lead

Sadler finished 2-for-4 on the day with a triple, double, one run scored and one RBI

Starter Shane Youman pitched well, but couldn’t get the defensive help needed as the Senators scored three unearned runs in the fourth inning to deadlock the game at three runs apiece

With one on in the bottom of the fourth, third baseman Brant Ust committed a throwing error, allowing Senator second baseman Melvin Dorta to advance third and Tim Raines Jr. safely reach base
After a double play which should have ended the inning, the Senators exploded offensively hitting back to back doubles to tie the game

Youman exited after 4-2/3 innings pitched, allowing one earned run on four hits, three walks and four strikeouts

Senator reliever Daniel Foli recorded the win, his first of the season, after pitching one inning allowing no hits and no runs

The Curve will try to win the series tomorrow in the rubber game match set for 7.05pm
Landon Jacobsen (6-5, 3.50) will get the ball tomorrow for the Curve against Senator RHP Justin Echols (5-2, 4.52)

Senators slice Curve

Richard Lane hit a game-winning single with one out in the tenth inning to lift red-hot Harrisburg to a 5-4 victory over Altoona

The Senators rallied from an early three-run deficit to earn their twelfth victory in sixteen games and halt the Curve's six-game winning streak

Harrisburg (39-31) stranded the winning run at third with one out in the ninth, but recovered an inning later
Josh Whitesell drew a one-out walk against Brandon Knight (0-2), Salomon Manriquez followed with a single and Lane ended it with a single to center

Daniel Foli (1-0) recorded the victory with a perfect tenth for the Senators, whose bullpen allowed just one unearned run in 3-1/3 innings

Harrisburg managed only seven hits as Prentice Redman and Frank Diaz both had fifteen game hitting streaks snapped

Curve starter Shane Youman yielded four runs - one earned - on four hits in 4-2/3 innings
He had allowed just two runs in his previous three starts (fourteen innings)

Craig Stansberry had an RBI single in the third and Ray Sadler hit an RBI triple and scored in the fourth as Altoona (42-28) jumped out to a 3-0 lead

Harrisburg tied it in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to RBI doubles from Dan Dement and Whitesell, before taking the lead on Redman's bases-loaded walk in the fifth

The Curve pulled even in the eighth when Stansberry scored on an error

Lane plays hero

To sit for an hour or two while your friends play a game takes its toll
It's never easy to be that guy on the bench, knowing your name could be called at any minute and trying like mad to maintain focus
Rich Lane has spent much of this season doing just that for the Harrisburg Senators

But here's why he's a professional
Lane, who sat for seven innings of last night's Eastern League contest against the Altoona Curve, blistered a game-winning RBI single to deep center in the tenth inning to give the Senators a 5-4 victory

"It's tough coming into a game after sitting" said Lane, a 26-year-old California native
"Plus you're usually seeing the other team's closers"

Just like tonight, when Lane rocked a 1-2 fastball off Curve closer Brandon Knight with one out and Josh Whitesell on second and Salomon Manriquez on first
Whitesell easily scored the winner, just as he nearly did one pitch earlier
Lane had looped a liner down the left-field line that landed just foul, dropping the left-handed hitter into a pitcher's count

"You never want to hit 1-2" Lane said
"We probably have a combined batting average of .120 when we're down 1-2
But you have to stay relaxed"

He did, and the Senators (39-31) snapped a three-game losing skid to the Curve (42-28) because of it

"That was a chore, but we'll take it" Harrisburg manager John Stearns said
"It's a key win because it was against Altoona"

The Senators still trail the second-place Curve by three games in the South Division
Only the top two teams advance to the playoffs

Stearns understands the difficulties of being a reserve but, because of his team's strong bench, loves playing in these games with National League affiliates
It gives the former New York Mets catcher a chance to showcase his substitutes

"One of the hardest things to do in sports is come off the bench in a game like that" Stearns said
"But this is how they'll do it in the big leagues with Washington
You've got to be ready over there on the bench, because you know you'll probably make an appearance as a pinch-hitter or on a double-switch"

Lane, Dan DeMent and Jesus Feliciano all entered the game on double-switches last night
Combined, they were 2-for-6 with two walks and two RBIs
Most of those plate appearances came against Altoona's stingy bullpen

The Senators rallied from a 3-0 deficit by scoring three times in the fourth and once more in the fifth

Left-handed starter Oscar Alvarez left in the seventh with a 4-3 lead, but the Curve plated the equalizer thanks to a passed ball and two errors in the eighth

Dan Kolb relieved Devin Perrin that inning and worked out of a first-and-third, one-out jam to keep the score knotted at four

Kolb then tossed a scoreless ninth before handing off to Dan Foli, who retired the Curve in order in the tenth to notch his first victory (1-0)

With one out in the bottom of the inning, Whitesell worked a walk from Knight (0-2) and moved to second on Manriquez's single
Lane then closed the festivities, sending the Commerce Bank Park crowd of 3,868 home happy

Notes
To make room for OF Feliciano, who came off the disabled list Monday, the Senators released RHP Billy Sylvester
Also announced yesterday - RHP Danny Rueckel was promoted from Harrisburg to Class AAA New Orleans, while LHP Jason Norderum was recalled from Class A Potomac
Manriquez was selected to play for the World team in the 2006 Futures Game, July 9 at Pittsburgh's PNC Park - the Venezuelan native entered yesterday's game batting .292 with 25 runs and 19 RBIs
CF Frank Diaz left yesterday's game in the fourth inning after he strained his back on a throw home - Stearns said he's day-to-day for now, but Diaz's fifteen game hitting streak came to a close
So did Prentice Redman's. Redman was 0-for-3 with a bases-loaded walk before leaving on a double-switch in the eighth
RHP Brett Campbell (back) was also unavailable yesterday and is day to day
Lane, who started the season with a 1980s retro baseball mustache, shaved it on a recent off day and said he's been hitting better because of it

Curve six-game win streak comes to an end

Brandon Knight simply ran out of big pitches Wednesday night

The Curve closer staved off defeat in the ninth inning with some clutch pitching but surrendered a walk-off RBI single in the tenth, giving Harrisburg a 5-4 win over Altoona at Commerce Bank Park

The loss snapped the Curve’s six-game winning streak

With one out in the tenth inning, Knight (0-2) issued a walk and surrendered a single that put the winning run in scoring position
Rich Lane then barely missed ending the game when he lifted a flyball to left field that landed foul by a few inches
The very next pitch, though, Lane smashed a long drive over Altoona center fielder Vic Buttler’s head for a walk-off RBI hit

Daniel Foli (1-0) earned the win by tossing a scoreless tenth inning for Harrisburg

Knight had wiggled out of trouble in the ninth inning, stranding the winning run at third base
The right-hander issued a leadoff walk, and the next batter, Melvin Dorta, bunted into a fielder’s choice forceout to reach base
Dorta then stole second and advanced to third when Curve catcher Dave Parrish’s throw sailed into center field
Knight got out of trouble when he struck out Tim Raines Jr. and pinch-hitter Josh Emmerick, sandwiched around an intentional walk to the Eastern League’s RBI leader, Kory Casto

The Curve trailed, 4-3, entering the eighth inning, but they scrapped back and tied the game without recording a hit
Walks by Craig Stansberry and Brett Roneberg placed runners at the corners with one out
The Senators then committed a fielding and a throwing error on a Simon Pond grounder to allow Stansberry to score and tie the game

Altoona starter Shane Youman began the game with three perfect innings, but things unraveled for the left-hander beginning in the fourth
Youman lasted 4-2/3 innings, giving up four runs - only one of them earned - with four strikeouts and three walks

Senators rally for 5-4 win
Rich Lane delivers game winning double in the tenth

The Senators evened their series with the Altoona Curve on Wednesday night, rallying from a 3-0 deficit to win 5-4 in ten innings

Rich Lane provided the game winning hit, a double over Curve center fielder Vic Buttler's head with one out in the tenth inning

After falling behind 3-0 the Senators rallied to tie the game in the fourth scoring three times
Dan DeMent had an RBI double as did Josh Whitesell

The Sens then took the lead on a bases loaded walk in the fifth

The game stayed 4-3 until the eighth inning when Altoona tied the score at four, but left a runner at third base

The Senators threatened in the ninth, but left the winning run at third base

In the bottom of the tenth Whitesell worked a walk with one out
Salomon Manriquez followed with a single to center, moving Whitesell to second base
Altoona closer Brandon Knight jumped ahead of Rich Lane, with Lane narrowly missing a game winning hit on a ball hit down the left field line
Instead, Lane got a pitch to his liking and drove it to deep center field for the game winner, scoring Whitsell

The Senators made a winner out of Dan Foli and are now 39-31 on the season

On Thursday night the series continues with game three as RHP Justin Echols goes to the mound for the Senators against RHP Landon Jacobsen for the Curve

Game time Thursday night is 6.35pm with the pre-game on 1460 The Ticket beginning at 6.20pm
