Altoona 5 - Reading 1

Craig Stansberry's two-run homer in the fifth inning snapped a 1-1 tie and led the Altoona Curve to a 5-1 Eastern League win over the Reading Phillies Sunday night at Blair County Ballpark

The Curve (41-27) swept the three-game series and have won five straight games

The Phillies (28-40) have lost four straight games

Altoona took a 1-0 lead off Gio Gonzalez (3-7) in the second
Simon Pond doubled with one out and scored on a triple by Ray Sadler

The Phillies tied the game in the fifth on a two-out RBI single by Gonzalez, snapping a streak of scoreless innings at 23-2/3

Stansberry's eighth homer of the season, a two-out blast to left, put the Curve up 3-1

Altoona added two more runs in the sixth inning

Gary Burnham had two hits for the Phillies, extending his hitting streak to ten games

Carlos Leon also had a pair of hits for Reading, including a double, and he scored the lone Phillies' run

Matt Peterson (4-5) allowed the one run in six innings to get the win

Jorge Vasquez recorded the final four outs for his fourth save

Peterson, Curve sweep Phils

Matt Peterson pitched six solid innings to lead Altoona past visiting Reading, 5-1, on Sunday

Peterson (4-5) gave up one run on five hits and struck out four to pick up his first win since May 10, helping the Curve (41-27) complete a three-game sweep of the Phillies (28-40)

Derrik Moeves followed with 1-1/3 one-hit frames and Jorge Vasquez got the final four outs for his fourth save

Ray Sadler's RBI triple in the second opened the scoring and Craig Stansberry belted a two-run homer in the fifth to put the Curve on top, 3-1

In the sixth, Milver Reyes smacked a run-scoring single and Rafael Alvarez added an RBI groundout

Sadler and Javier Guzman each had three hits, while Stansberry finished with two hits and two RBIs to lead the Curve (41-27) to their fifth straight win

Reading starter Gio Gonzalez (3-7) took the loss after surrendering five runs on eleven hits and one walk over 5-2/3 innings
He had a two-out RBI single in the fifth, ending a run of 22-1/3 scoreless innings by Altoona pitchers

Carlos Leon and Gary Burnham had two hits apiece for the Phillies, who managed just one run during the sweep and dropped their fourth in a row overall

Curve win fifth in row

Ray Searage’s head could be spinning right now, but if that were the case, he wouldn’t be such a respected pitching coach

“Ray’s done an awesome job” Curve pitcher Mike Connolly said Sunday
“He keeps everybody fresh and keeps everybody going
It’s a pleasure to be around a guy like that”

Searage has watched his pitching staff endure a slew of transactions over the past three weeks
Pitchers have come and gone, and the team’s ERA briefly slipped to next to last in the Eastern League

Curve hurlers didn’t have any trouble, though, over the weekend against Reading, turning in three dominant performances to sweep the R-Phils

Matt Peterson fired six strong innings Sunday, and Altoona won its fifth in a row with a 5-1 victory before 7,617 fans at Blair County Ballpark

The Curve fired back-to-back shutouts Friday and Saturday and approached the franchise record for consecutive scoreless innings Sunday
Reading snapped the streak at twenty-six innings with a run in the fifth, so the record remains at 28-1/3 frames

Such a streak occurring now is impressive considering that, over the past 21 days, changes to Altoona’s pitching staff have included:-
------LHP starter Josh Shortslef and RHP reliever Jonathan Albaladejo placed on disabled list
------Free agent RHPs Blaine Neal and Franklin Perez added
------RHP Chad Blackwell added from extended spring training, then later sent to Single-A Lynchburg
------LHP Brady Borner retired
------RHP Chris Rojas, who had just joined the team and made three starts, placed on DL
------RHP Matt Lorenzo acquired in trade with Atlanta
------RHP Landon Jacobsen promoted to Triple-A Indianapolis
------RHP Ron Chiavacci added from Triple-A
------RHP Derrik Moeves added from low-A Hickory
Throw the Kip Wells rehab assignment into the mix, and that’s fourteen roster moves involving pitchers in the past twenty-one days

Also, Connolly, the Curve’s top starter, was promoted to Triple-A after Sunday’s game, giving Searage yet another challenge

Searage’s upbeat personality and devotion to his pitchers’ development have helped the club through the tough stretch

“Those guys are lucky to have a guy who cares about them so much as people first and pitcher second and works as hard as he does and is as positive as he is” Curve manager Tim Leiper said

Searage gives all the credit to the pitchers
“The biggest thing with these guys, this isn’t their first rodeo” he said
“They know how to control themselves
We go over the hitters, and they’re prepared to go out there”

A coach can’t possibly know all the strengths and weaknesses of so many pitchers coming and going, but Searage says that’s not the most important element
He’s big on pitch execution and being prepared to attack each hitter’s weakness

“No matter which way you deliver the pitch, you’ve still got to execute that pitch” Searage said
“In this series right here, we did execute the pitches”

Peterson executed well Sunday night for his best start in more than a month
The right-hander, who lugged a 6.82 ERA into the game, gave up just a run on five hits with four strikeouts and no walks over six innings

“He comes out and throws just a gem today” Leiper said
“He’s got to feel great about it”

The Curve led from the fifth inning on after Craig Stansberry’s two-run homer off Reading starter Gio Gonzalez (3-7) made it 3-1

Ray Sadler, who went 3-for-4, had an RBI triple in the first and scored one of Altoona’s pair of runs in the sixth that made it 5-1

Moeves worked 1-1/3 scoreless innings in relief, then Jorge Vasquez recorded the final four outs for his fourth save

The Curve continue to play sizzling ball at home, improving to 27-10 with the sweep
Players have always loved the confines of Blair County Ballpark, but this year’s team has been particularly dominant at home

“We’ve got a great fan base and a great stadium, and it’s just a great setup here” Stansberry said
“You can’t help but love playing at home here in Altoona”

Around the Curve
The Curve will be getting right-hander Wardell Starling from Single-A Lynchburg to take Connolly’s rotation spot - Starling is 4-4 with a 3.18 ERA for the Hillcats
Lorenzo was sent down to Lynchburg on Sunday - he allowed five runs over three innings in his lone appearance
The Curve have one opening in the rotation that will be filled in the coming days
Javier Guzman joined Sadler with three hits
