It took extra innings but the
Altoona Curve dropped game one of the doubleheader, 11-6, to the
New Hampshire Fisher Cats Saturday evening at Blair County Ballpark
A five-run lead wasnt enough for the Curve as the Fisher
Cats scored five times in the sixth to force extra frames and
five more in the eight to seal the victory
The loss marked the first time Altoona has dropped four games
in a row all season
New Hampshire broke the 6-6 deadlock with ease, scoring five times
in the top of the eighth to put the game out of reach
After Tony Miller scored the go-ahead run on a Brant Ust throwing
error at the plate, New Hampshire first baseman Vito Chiaravalloti
hit a three-run homerun to put the Fisher Cats comfortably in
front
The Curve appeared to be in control after scoring three runs in
both the fourth and fifth innings, building themselves a sizeable
6-1 lead
That lead quickly diminished however, as the Fisher Cats clawed
their way back into the game with a five-run sixth inning led
by third baseman Eric Arnold, who smashed a two run shot over
the stands in left-center field
The Cats sent ten batters to the plate that inning, scoring five
times on five hits, three of which were for extra bases
Starter Mike Connolly glided through the first five innings and
appeared well on his way to his sixth victory when New Hampshire
tagged him for four runs in the sixth
The southpaw tied his season high with seven strikeouts in 5-1/3
innings pitched allowing four runs on six hits
The start was his 71st in a Curve uniform, breaking the old record
of 70 set by ex-Curve hurler John Grabow
Rodney Ormond (2-3) picked up the victory for the Fisher Cats

Vito Chiaravalloti's three-run
homer highlighted a five-run eighth inning as visiting New Hampshire
beat Altoona, 11-6, in the opener of Saturday's doubleheader
After Tony Miller and Adam Lind scored on a throwing error by
third baseman Brant Ust to snap a 6-6 tie, Chiaravalloti cranked
his fourth homer of the season to left field off reliever Jorge

The rally made a winner of reliever Rodney Ormond (2-3), who retired
five consecutive batters in the Fisher Cats' fifth straight victory
Chip Cannon slugged a leadoff homer in the fourth for New Hampshire
(23-29), but an RBI single by Ray Sadler and a two-run shot by
David Parrish in the bottom half gave the Curve a 3-1 lead

An RBI double by David Smith sparked the scoring for the Fisher
Cats (24-29), who also had a pair of five-run innings in the opener,
which they won, 11-6
Erik Kratz stroked an RBI single and Chip Cannon scored on an
error by third baseman Brandon Chaves
After Tony Miller's RBI groundout, Manuel Mayorson delivered a
run-scoring single for a 5-1 lead
Mayorson added an RBI single in the sixth ahead of a two-run double
by Adam Lind, who extended his hitting streak to 14 games
Ray Sadler's solo homer in the second gave the Curve (33-23) an
early lead, while a two-run triple by Vic Buttler in the fifth

Davis Romero (6-4) collected the win, yielding three runs - one

The Fisher Cats had two five-run innings in game one to overcome
a 6-1 Curve lead and eventually won 11-6 in extra innings
New Hampshire scored five times in the fourth - three of which

Right fielder David Smith lined a ground-rule double to left driving
home Vito Chiaravalloti, which opened the floodgates
A throwing error by third baseman Brandon Chaves extended the
inning a few batters later, allowing the Fisher Cats to increase

Other than a Ray Sadler solo home run and a triple by Vic Buttler,
the Curve offense was sluggish most of the game, only recording

It was Buttler's league-leading 10th triple of the year
Starter Davis Romero was very efficient for the Fisher Cats, allowing

Altoona started with five great innings, then got blitzed over
the final ten frames to get swept by New Hampshire in a doubleheader
The Curve now have lost a season-high five straight games after
the 11-6 and 8-3 setbacks before 7,590 fans at Blair Co-unty Ballpark
Altoona led 6-1 in the fifth inning of the first game before falling
apart
The Fisher Cats charged back with ten unanswered runs to win in
extra innings (eight), then the visitors used a five-run fourth
inning to capture the second game
New Hampshire had three different five-run innings in the doubleheader,
which didnt end until after midnight
The Fisher Cats ran their winning streak to six games
The Curve appeared to be cruising in the first game with the 6-1
lead, but defensive problems and struggles from the usually reliable

New Hampshire cashed in on a crucial error in the eighth to win

The Fisher Cats loaded the bases with one out against reliever
Jorge Vasquez (1-2), and Eric Kratz hit a soft roller to Brant

Ust bobbled the ball briefly but still had enough time to throw

His throw to Parrish at the plate was wild, however, allowing
Tony Miller and Lind to score the go-ahead runs

New Hampshire got on the board first in game one thanks to a solo
homer by designated hitter Chip Cannon in the fourth, breaking
a string of 134 consecutive at bats without a home run as a team
Altoona responded with three runs in the bottom half of the fourth,
including a two-run home run by catcher David Parrish off of New
Hampshire starter Kurt Isenberg
The Curve extended their lead to 6-1 in the fifth inning, plating
three more runs against Isenberg, who ended up allowing six runs
(five earned) on seven hits and two walks in four innings
The Fisher Cats mounted a comeback in the sixth inning, scoring
five runs to tie the game at 6-6

The Fisher Cats responded with another big inning, this time scoring
five runs in the fourth against righty Chris Rojas (0-1), who
allowed five runs on two hits and six walks in three and a third
innings
New Hampshire's five-run inning was a result of three hits, three
walks, and an error on Altoona third baseman Brandon Chaves
The Curve cut into the lead in the fifth after a two-run triple
by center fielder Vic Buttler off of Romero brought them within
5-3
The Fisher Cats extended the lead to 8-3 in the sixth inning thanks
to an RBI single by shortstop Manny Mayorson and a two-run double
by left fielder Adam Lind, who extended his hit streak to fourteen
games
Romero ended up allowing three runs (one earned) on just three
hits and three walks in six innings while striking out seven
Righty Brian Wolfe pitched a scoreless seventh inning to close
out the 8-3 victory
The teams will meet again on Sunday at 6.05pm at Blair County
Ballpark in the final game of a three game series
Fisher Cats right-hander Ismael Ramirez (4-3, 1.23) will take
the mound against Altoona righty Landon Jacobsen (5-5, 3.72)
