Friday's game postponed - doubleheader scheduled for Saturday

Friday night's game between the the Altoona Curve and the New Hampshire Fisher Cats
at Blair County Ballpark was postponed due to heavy rain
and will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Saturday

The first game of the twinbill will be a seven-inning contest beginning at 6.05pm,
with the second game starting approximately a half hour after its conclusion

The Curve will send Mike Connolly (5-3) to the mound in game one
against New Hampshire's Kurt Isenberg (1-6)
In the night cap, Chris Rojas (0-0) will start for Altoona
against Fisher Cat southpaw Davis Romero (5-4)

Fans holding tickets to Friday’s game can exchange their rain checks for tickets
of equal or lesser value to any remaining 2006 Altoona Curve regular season home game,
based upon availability

One of the most recognizable television stars will be at Blair County Ballpark when
Barry Williams (“Greg Brady”)
continues the Curve’s Retro Celebrity Series on Saturday night
Williams will be throwing out a ceremonial first pitch
and signing autographs on the concourse

Along with celebrating Brady Bunch Night,
the Curve will be handing out free Altoona Curve Logo Baseballs
to the first 2,000 fans in attendance presented by General Mills and Giant Eagle

11-6, in extra innings Saturday night at Blair County Ballpark
A five-run lead wasn't enough for the Curve as the Fisher Cats scored five times
in the sixth and five more in the eighth to seal the come-from-behind win

Fisher Cats come from behind to take Game One

It took extra innings but the Altoona Curve dropped game one of the doubleheader, 11-6, to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats Saturday evening at Blair County Ballpark

A five-run lead wasn’t enough for the Curve as the Fisher Cats scored five times in the sixth to force extra frames and five more in the eight to seal the victory

The loss marked the first time Altoona has dropped four games in a row all season

New Hampshire broke the 6-6 deadlock with ease, scoring five times in the top of the eighth to put the game out of reach
After Tony Miller scored the go-ahead run on a Brant Ust throwing error at the plate, New Hampshire first baseman Vito Chiaravalloti hit a three-run homerun to put the Fisher Cats comfortably in front

The Curve appeared to be in control after scoring three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, building themselves a sizeable 6-1 lead

That lead quickly diminished however, as the Fisher Cats clawed their way back into the game with a five-run sixth inning led by third baseman Eric Arnold, who smashed a two run shot over the stands in left-center field
The Cats sent ten batters to the plate that inning, scoring five times on five hits, three of which were for extra bases

Starter Mike Connolly glided through the first five innings and appeared well on his way to his sixth victory when New Hampshire tagged him for four runs in the sixth
The southpaw tied his season high with seven strikeouts in 5-1/3 innings pitched allowing four runs on six hits
The start was his 71st in a Curve uniform, breaking the old record of 70 set by ex-Curve hurler John Grabow

Rodney Ormond (2-3) picked up the victory for the Fisher Cats after pitching the final five outs

Jorge Vasquez (1-2) got the loss after pitching the eighth and allowing five runs on three hits

Brandon Knight had his streak of 20-1/3 consecutive scoreless innings pitched broke when he allowed two Fisher Cats to cross the plate in the sixth
Knight, who previously had not allowed a run to score in his last twelve outings, settled down to finish the sixth and pitch a scoreless seventh

Simon Pond went 2-for-3 for the Curve and scored two runs in the losing effort

Brett Roneberg, Ray Sadler, Craig Stansberry and Parrish also drove in runs for Altoona

Chris Rojas (0-0) will try to earn the split in the twinbill for the Curve against New Hampshire lefty Davis Romero (5-4)

Fisher Cats drop Curve in Game One

Vito Chiaravalloti's three-run homer highlighted a five-run eighth inning as visiting New Hampshire beat Altoona, 11-6, in the opener of Saturday's doubleheader
After Tony Miller and Adam Lind scored on a throwing error by third baseman Brant Ust to snap a 6-6 tie, Chiaravalloti cranked his fourth homer of the season to left field off reliever Jorge Vasquez (1-2)

The rally made a winner of reliever Rodney Ormond (2-3), who retired five consecutive batters in the Fisher Cats' fifth straight victory

Chip Cannon slugged a leadoff homer in the fourth for New Hampshire (23-29), but an RBI single by Ray Sadler and a two-run shot by David Parrish in the bottom half gave the Curve a 3-1 lead

Brett Roneberg and Craig Stansberry each picked up an RBI as Altoona (33-22), which is on a four-game slide, scored three runs in the fifth to make it 6-1

Manuel Mayorson and Lind plated three runs with doubles and Eric Arnold hammered a two-run roundtripper in the sixth for the Fisher Cats
Lind went 3-for-5, extending his hitting streak to 13 games

Cats take two from Curve

New Hampshire scored five runs in the fourth inning en route to an 8-3 victory and doubleheader sweep of Altoona on Saturday

An RBI double by David Smith sparked the scoring for the Fisher Cats (24-29), who also had a pair of five-run innings in the opener, which they won, 11-6

Erik Kratz stroked an RBI single and Chip Cannon scored on an error by third baseman Brandon Chaves
After Tony Miller's RBI groundout, Manuel Mayorson delivered a run-scoring single for a 5-1 lead

Mayorson added an RBI single in the sixth ahead of a two-run double by Adam Lind, who extended his hitting streak to 14 games

Ray Sadler's solo homer in the second gave the Curve (33-23) an early lead, while a two-run triple by Vic Buttler in the fifth capped their scoring
Buttler leads the Eastern League with ten triples

Davis Romero (6-4) collected the win, yielding three runs - one earned - on three hits over six innings
The 23-year-old left-hander walked three and struck out seven as the Fisher Cats extended their winning streak to six games

Chris Rojas (0-1) surrendered five runs on two hits and six walks in 3-1/3 innings as Altoona's dropped its fifth straight
The 29-year-old right-hander left in the top of the fourth with an arm injury

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats completed a doubleheader sweep over the Curve

Curve swept in doubleheader

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats (24-29) completed a doubleheader sweep over the Altoona Curve (33-23) Saturday night with a 8-3 victory in game two at Blair County Ballpark

New Hampshire used yet another five-run inning in the fourth to help secure the win
The Fisher Cats had two five-run innings in game one to overcome a 6-1 Curve lead and eventually won 11-6 in extra innings

New Hampshire scored five times in the fourth - three of which were earned
Right fielder David Smith lined a ground-rule double to left driving home Vito Chiaravalloti, which opened the floodgates
A throwing error by third baseman Brandon Chaves extended the inning a few batters later, allowing the Fisher Cats to increase the lead

Other than a Ray Sadler solo home run and a triple by Vic Buttler, the Curve offense was sluggish most of the game, only recording three hits
It was Buttler's league-leading 10th triple of the year

Starter Davis Romero was very efficient for the Fisher Cats, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits in six innings

In his third start of the season, hurler Chris Rojas (1-1) got the loss after allowing three earned runs off of two hits in 3-1/3 innings pitched

New Hampshire tacked on three runs of run support in the sixth inning off of Curve newcomer Chad Blackwell
In his second appearance of the season, Blackwell gave up three runs on three hits

With the two losses tonight the Curve fall to half-a-game out of first place behind the Akron Aeros
The Aeros swept the Curve in a three-game series last weekend
The two do not meet again until June 24th

Landon Jacobsen (5-5) is scheduled to pitch on Sunday for Altoona against New Hampshire’s Ismael Ramirez (4-3)
The first pitch is slated for 6.05pm, and the gates open at 5.00pm

Fisher Cats hand Curve fifth defeat in a row

Saturday night couldn’t have started much better or ended much worse for the slumping Curve
Altoona started with five great innings, then got blitzed over the final ten frames to get swept by New Hampshire in a doubleheader

The Curve now have lost a season-high five straight games after the 11-6 and 8-3 setbacks before 7,590 fans at Blair Co-unty Ballpark

Altoona led 6-1 in the fifth inning of the first game before falling apart

The Fisher Cats charged back with ten unanswered runs to win in extra innings (eight), then the visitors used a five-run fourth inning to capture the second game

New Hampshire had three different five-run innings in the doubleheader, which didn’t end until after midnight

The Fisher Cats ran their winning streak to six games

The Curve appeared to be cruising in the first game with the 6-1 lead, but defensive problems and struggles from the usually reliable bullpen doomed the club

Chip Cannon homered off Curve starter Mike Connolly in the fourth, then Altoona rallied for three runs in its half of the inning
Ray Sadler’s RBI single tied it, and David Parrish belted a two-run homer to make it 3-1

The Curve stretched the cushion to 6-1 with three runs in the fifth, started by Brett Roneberg’s RBI single
Craig Stansberry’s bases-loaded groundout scored Roneberg,
and Simon Pond came home on a throwing error by second baseman Carlo Cota

What looked like an easy victory slipped away as New Hampshire pulled even with five runs in the sixth
Eric Arnold’s two-run homer made it 6-4 and chased Connolly, who allowed four runs on six hits in 5-1/3 innings
Reliever Brandon Knight, who entered with a scoreless streak of 17-1/3 consecutive innings, couldn’t protect the lead
Knight allowed a single and walk before Adam Lind’s two-run double pulled the Fisher Cats even, 6-6

New Hampshire cashed in on a crucial error in the eighth to win the game
The Fisher Cats loaded the bases with one out against reliever Jorge Vasquez (1-2), and Eric Kratz hit a soft roller to Brant Ust at third base
Ust bobbled the ball briefly but still had enough time to throw home for a forceout
His throw to Parrish at the plate was wild, however, allowing Tony Miller and Lind to score the go-ahead runs
The next batter, Vito Chiaravalloti, cracked a three-run homer to give the Fisher Cats a five-run lead

Fisher Cats Sweep Doubleheader
Extend Winning Streak to Six Games

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats (24-29) swept a doubleheader from the Altoona Curve (33-23) at Blair County Ballpark Saturday night to extend their winning streak to six consecutive games

The Fisher Cats took game one of the doubleheader 11-6 as they scored five runs in the sixth and then five more in the first extra inning (the eighth inning, as the game was scheduled for seven innings) for the comeback win

New Hampshire got on the board first in game one thanks to a solo homer by designated hitter Chip Cannon in the fourth, breaking a string of 134 consecutive at bats without a home run as a team

Altoona responded with three runs in the bottom half of the fourth, including a two-run home run by catcher David Parrish off of New Hampshire starter Kurt Isenberg

The Curve extended their lead to 6-1 in the fifth inning, plating three more runs against Isenberg, who ended up allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits and two walks in four innings

The Fisher Cats mounted a comeback in the sixth inning, scoring five runs to tie the game at 6-6
Third baseman Eric Arnold hit a two-run homer in the inning off of Altoona starter Mike Connolly
Connolly left the game after the home run after allowing four runs on six hits and four walks in five and a third innings
He struck out seven batters
Left fielder Adam Lind hit a two-run double in the inning, one of his three hits that extended his hit streak to thirteen games

The game remained tied at 6-6 and headed to extra innings

In the top of the eighth, the Fisher Cats scored five runs, including a three-run shot by first baseman Vito Chiaravalloti off of righty Jorge Vasquez (1-2)

New Hampshire righty Rodney Ormond (2-3) retired all five hitters he faced to earn the win in relief

In game two Altoona jumped out to the 1-0 lead after a solo homer by right fielder Ray Sadler in the second inning off of lefty Davis Romero (6-4)

The Fisher Cats responded with another big inning, this time scoring five runs in the fourth against righty Chris Rojas (0-1), who allowed five runs on two hits and six walks in three and a third innings
New Hampshire's five-run inning was a result of three hits, three walks, and an error on Altoona third baseman Brandon Chaves

The Curve cut into the lead in the fifth after a two-run triple by center fielder Vic Buttler off of Romero brought them within 5-3

The Fisher Cats extended the lead to 8-3 in the sixth inning thanks to an RBI single by shortstop Manny Mayorson and a two-run double by left fielder Adam Lind, who extended his hit streak to fourteen games

Romero ended up allowing three runs (one earned) on just three hits and three walks in six innings while striking out seven

Righty Brian Wolfe pitched a scoreless seventh inning to close out the 8-3 victory

The teams will meet again on Sunday at 6.05pm at Blair County Ballpark in the final game of a three game series
