Game Reports

The Altoona Curve got home runs from Javier Guzman (pictured) and David Parrish,
but it wasn't enough as they fell to the Akron Aeros 7-3 Tuesday night at Canal Park
The two teams are now separated by just 2-1/2 games in the Southern Division standings,
with the Curve still in first place for the 19th consecutive day
Guzman's 2-for-4 game at the plate was overshadowed by three defensive errors
leading to three unearned Aeros' runs

Aeros soar past Curve, 7-3

The Altoona Curve got home runs from Javier Guzman and David Parrish, but it wasn’t enough as they fell to the Akron Aeros 7-3 Tuesday night at Canal Park

The two teams are now separated by just 2-1/2 games in the Southern Division standings, with the Curve still in first place for the 19th consecutive day

Guzman finished the contest 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, but his offensive exploits couldn’t make up for three defensive errors earlier in the contest, the most of any Curve player this season
The first two of his miscues led to a total of three unearned runs for the Aeros, giving Akron an early lead

Landon Jacobsen (5-5) was the hard-luck loser, surrendering just one earned run on six hits in five innings
Jacobsen has now taken the decision in 10 of his 11 appearances for the Curve in 2006

Akron starter Adam Miller (5-4) was very strong, allowing just one hit to the first twelve Curve batters he faced in the ball game
The right-hander cruised to his fifth win of the season, with just one run allowed on four hits and eight strikeouts in seven innings

A Kevin Kouzmanoff two-out single in the first inning turned into trouble when a wild pitch by Jacobsen and a throwing error by Guzman on consecutive plays allowed him to score the game’s first run

The Aeros would build a 4-0 advantage before Altoona got on the board with a single tally of their own in the sixth frame

Two innings and two Akron runs later, the Curve would again cut the deficit to three runs when Parrish and Guzman both blasted solo home runs in the eighth

Any hope the Curve had of a last-inning comeback was shut down by Dan Denham, who was called in from the bullpen to pitch the ninth inning
Denham allowed just a single to Rafael Alvarez in slamming the door on the Curve

Altoona’s offense sputtered all night, totaling just seven hits and sending more than four batters to the plate in an inning only once

The team drew only one walk and Guzman and Vic Buttler were the only Curve players with more than one base hit

Ryan Mulhern was the offensive leader for Akron, finishing the game 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and six total bases

The Curve and Aeros will continue their series Wednesday night at 7.05pm at Canal Park
Matt Peterson (3-3) will start for Altoona against undefeated Sean Smith (4-0) for Akron

Aeros breathing down on Curve

No matter where they are in the standings, the Curve have always had to glance over their shoulders to see what Akron is doing
It’s been that way for years between the Southern Division’s perennial frontrunners, and this season doesn’t appear to be any different

The first-place Curve have an opportunity to create some more breathing room this week against the second-place Aeros, but Akron denied them that chance in the series opener Tuesday night
The Aeros led throughout in a 7-3 victory at Canal Park to pull within 2-1/2 games of Altoona

Akron cashed in on three errors by Curve shortstop Javier Guzman and rode a strong performance from right-hander Adam Miller, the Indians’ No. 1 prospect
Miller (5-4) gave up a run on four hits over seven innings, striking out eight with one walk

Curve starter Landon Jacobsen (5-5) lost for the fifth time in six decisions, allowing four runs on six hits over five innings
Only one of the runs charged to Jacobsen was earned

A two-out wild throw by Guzman gave the Aeros a run in the first inning
Guzman’s second error allowed Ivan Ochoa to reach to start the fourth, and the runner eventually scored
Guzman’s final error in the seventh let a runner on before Ryan Mulhern cracked a two-run homer that made it 6-1

Guzman made up for some of his defensive miscues with a big night at the plate
He tripled and scored on Vic Buttler’s single in the sixth, and in the eighth he belted a solo homer, his second of the season

David Parrish also homered in the eighth, his first since joining the Curve

Mulhern, one of seven returning Akron players instrumental in last year’s Eastern League championship, went 3-for-4

The Aeros always have one of the league’s top pitching staffs, and things won’t get any easier tonight for the Curve against Sean Smith
The right-hander is 4-0 with a 1.38 ERA and hasn’t allowed a run in 24-1/3 innings

Miller, Akron top Altoona

Adam Miller struck out eight over seven innings to lead host Akron over Altoona, 7-3, on Tuesday

Miller (5-4) allowed one run on four hits and walked one in the victory
It was the right-hander's longest outing of the season and snapped a personal three-game losing streak

Ryan Mulhern had three hits, including a two-run homer in the seventh inning, and three RBIs to lead the offense for Akron (30-21)

Ivan Ochoa went 3-for-4 with two runs and Eider Torres had two hits and two RBIs to round out the Aeros' 11-hit attack

Javi Herrera went hitless in three at-bats, ending his 10-game hit streak

Landon Jacobsen took the loss, allowing four runs - three earned - on seven hits
He struck out three and walked two over five innings for Altoona (33-19)

David Parrish and Javier Guzman provided the Curve with their only offense when they each blasted solo home runs in the eighth
