Friday nights game between
the Altoona Curve and the Binghamton Mets has been suspended due
to rain with the Mets leading 1-0 in the bottom of the second
The game will resume on Saturday at 6.00pm, with two men on and
two out for Binghamton
Following the completion of the suspended game, the Curve and
Mets will play a shortened seven-inning game
Saturday will be the second double header between the Curve and
Mets in eight days, with the Curve taking both games of a twin-bill
last Friday
The Mets will head into Saturdays makeshift doubleheader
with a 1-0 lead courtesy of a Michel Abreu RBI single in the bottom
of the first, that plated Bobby Malek and broke the scoreless
tie
Altoona's starter Mike Connolly struggled early, allowing four
hits and a walk in only 1-2/3 innings of work
The Curve will still be looking for their first hit, as their
lone base runner of the game came courtesy of a Simon Pond walk
in the second
Prior to the game, the Altoona Curve added OF Ray Sadler from
Triple-A Indianapolis and 3B/OF Brant Ust was activated from the
Disabled List
The two moves will fill the spots on the Curve roster vacated
by RHP Josh Sharpless and OF Adam Boeve, who were promoted to
Indianapolis following Wednesdays game
Also, OF Chaz Lytle, who had been on the Curves Disabled
List since May 1, was transferred to Lynchburg (A) on Wednesday
and has been activated by the Hillcats

Game Reports
For Mike Connolly, it was a chance to pitch
close to home
For Bryan Edwards, it was a chance to get back on the mound
However brief it turned out to be
Connolly, an Oneonta native, started for the Altoona Curve in
their Eastern League game against the Binghamton Mets on Friday
night at NYSEG Stadium
Edwards made his first start since being put on the B-Mets' disabled
list last month
But neither had much chance to show their stuff
The game was suspended in the second inning after rain left the
field unplayable
It will be picked up starting at 6.00pm today with two runners
on base, two outs in the second inning and the B-Mets leading,
1-0
Today's regularly scheduled game will follow and be limited to
seven innings
Connolly, who is in his fourth season with the Curve, allowed
a run on four hits and had two strikeouts
"I felt good out there" Connolly said
"They had a couple broken-bat singles, some bloops and a
ground ball that just got in the hole, but I felt good"
Edwards, who hadn't pitched since April 26 because of a strained
oblique muscle, retired all six batters he faced
"It felt good to get out there and get the adrenaline going"
Edwards said
"I felt a little rusty at first, but I'm happy with how I
pitched
All in all, it was a good day"
Connolly, who was Altoona's opening day starter, has fully recovered
from the left elbow surgery that ended his 2004 season early and
bothered him at times last season
He came into Friday's game 3-3 with a 4.99 ERA and 34 strikeouts
and 21 walks in 39-2/3 innings
On Friday, Connolly looked strong at times
In the first inning, he struck out both Jorge Padilla and Jay
Caligiuri with nice curveballs
But the B-Mets also came alive offensively off the left-hander
Bobby Malek led off the first with a single and later scored on
Michel Abreu's soft single to center field
Yunir Garcia and Edwards hit back-to-back singles in the second
inning before the rain became too heavy to continue
The game was delayed for nearly 90 minutes before it was officially
suspended
Despite getting hit early, Connolly was happy with the way he
pitched
"I can't be too upset" he said
"I wish I could have pitched later into the game"
Connolly said he planned on returning to Oneonta on Friday night
to visit with friends and family before rejoining the team this
afternoon
This is Altoona's only scheduled appearance at NYSEG Stadium this
season
"I was looking forward to pitching this game" Connolly
said
"It's always good to play close to home and have my friends
and family here
It's a disappointment, but that's the nature of the game"
Edwards, who entered the game 1-2 with a 6.98 ERA, was on a strict
50-pitch count
He threw 21 pitches through two innings
"I just wanted to do what I could to help us" Edwards
said
"It was good to feel the butterflies in my stomach before
the game again"
Edwards walked Simon Pond on four pitches to lead off the second
inning, but got out of the inning thanks to a 4-6-3 double play
"When he walked the first batter in the second inning, I
sensed some of his rustiness" B-Mets manager Juan Samuel
said
"But he came back and got out of that
We were hoping he could give us 3-4 innings"
Samuel said that Tim McNab will likely start the continuation
of Friday's game
Mike Pelfrey will make his scheduled start in the second game
Gates will open at 5.30pm today for the resumption of the suspended
game
