The Harrisburg Senators slugged three home runs in beating the Altoona Curve on Tuesday night at Commerce Bank Park, 6-2

The win pulled the Senators just one game behind the second-place Curve in the Southern Division

Harrisburg broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning with back-to-back homeruns by Kory Casto and Frank Diaz to stake a four-run lead
Kasto’s three run blast came with one out and after Robert Fick and Melvin Dorta started the frame with consecutive singles
Diaz then came to the plate and ripped a solo-shot for his team-leading 18th RBI

The two teams would trade runs in the seventh inning, but Altoona could manage just a pair of walks in the final two innings and lost back-to-back games to start a series for the second time in a row

Landon Jacobsen (4-3), who began the year as the only pitcher in Curve history to win his first four starts, has now dropped three straight decisions
Jacobsen allowed five earned runs on nine hits in five innings pitched on Tuesday

The Curve starters have now recorded a 5.65 ERA in the last 15 games, a span during which Altoona has posted a 6-9 record

Fick led off the game for Harrisburg with a first inning homerun to put the Senators up 1-0

The Curve responded when catcher Milver Reyes knocked in his first run of the year, scoring Adam Boeve from third with a single to left field in the second inning
Reyes finished the game 2-for-4 and drove in both runs for Altoona
He was the only Curve hitter that turned in a multi-hit effort as Altoona was limited to just five base hits for the second game in a row

Boeve went 1-for-3 in the contest and was the only Curve player to score, crossing the plate twice

Senators starter Kip Boughknight (2-2) held the Curve offense in check, allowing just two earned runs on five hits in seven innings to pick up his second win of the year

Brett Roneberg’s season-high 13-game hitting streak came to an end on Tuesday
The first baseman finished the game 0-for-4 with a strikeout

Jorge Vasquez pitched the last two innings for the Curve, allowing a run on three walks and a hit while striking out three

The Curve and Senators close out their three-game series Wednesday afternoon at 12.05pm at Commerce Bank Park
Matt Peterson (2-2) starts for the Curve against Oscar Alvarez (1-1)

The Curve will return home to begin a seven-game homestand on Thursday at 6.35pm against the Binghamton Mets

Senators power their way to 6-2 win
Bouknight goes seven solid innings for win

The Senators made it three in a row on Tuesday night with a 6-2 win over the Altoona Curve

Kip Bouknight pitched seven solid innings for his second win of the year, and the Senators homered three times for the first time this season

A Tuesday night crowd of 2,294 enjoyed fine weather and good baseball as the Senators moved to 18-14 on the season with the win

For the first time this year the Senators hit three home runs in a game, one by Robert Fick leading off the bottom of the first, and then Kory Casto and Frank Diaz went back to back in the fifth
Casto's was a three run home run, his fourth of the season

Jesus Feliciano had three hits for the Senators and Melvin Dorta chipped in a couple among the ten hits Harrisburg pounded out

The Senators relied on strong starting pitching from Bouknight and solid defense, which has been a recipe for success this season
The Senators have now gone three straight games without committing an error

Bouknight, allowed single runs in the second and seventh innings, and between those runs retired 14 in a row

The Senators go for the series sweep against Altoona (19-13) on Wednesday afternoon at 12.05pm

Senators’ home runs sink Curve

Harrisburg used the long ball Tuesday night to continue the Curve’s now six-game swoon

The Senators hit three home runs off Curve starter Landon Jacobsen, including back-to-back shots by Kory Casto and Frank Diaz in a four-run fifth inning to win, 6-2, at Commerce Bank Park

The Curve have now gone 1-5 in their last six games and dropped to 19-13 overall and 1-1/2 games behind Southern Division leader Akron, which beat Erie, 5-1

A sign of things to come came in the bottom of the first when Senators leadoff hitter Robert Fick hit his first home run of the season

Milver Reyes, who came into the game hitting .105, was the hitting star for the Curve, who managed only five hits
Reyes knocked in Adam Boeve in the second inning with a single to right
Reyes chased Boeve home again in the seventh with a two-out single to right field

The score remained 1-1 until the fifth, when Casto hit a one-out, three-run home run to left field
Diaz followed with a solo shot over the left field fence

It was a rough night for Jacobsen (4-3), giving up nine hits, five earned runs and three walks while striking out three

On the other hand, Senators starter Kip Bouknight (2-2) surrendered just five hits, two earned runs and one walk while striking out seven in seven innings

Beltran Perez pitched two hitless and scoreless innings

Harrisburg scored its last run on a wild pitch by reliever Jorge Vasquez in the bottom of the seventh

Altoona’s Brett Roneberg went 0-for-4 and saw his 13-game hitting streak snapped

Bouknight gets well-earned win

Some days have passed since Harrisburg's 27-year-old starter enjoyed this type of outcome
Nearly a month, actually

But Kip Bouknight, who Senators manager John Stearns called "one of the best competitors I've seen in a while," wanted and most certainly deserved a positive decision last night at Commerce Bank Park
And not even Altoona, among the Eastern League heavyweights, could deny it

Bouknight, mostly workmanlike yet brilliant at times, scattered five hits over seven innings to highlight Harrisburg's 6-2 victory over the Curve
Bouknight struck out seven and walked just one, banking his first victory since an April 12 match with Trenton

"Kip's been throwing well and he was able to spot his fastball inside and out
He was the key tonight" said Stearns, who earned partial credit for a hands-off assist in Harrisburg's pivotal fifth inning
"Anytime you get solid pitching and three home runs, you're going to be tough to beat
But Kip is such a great competitor"

Most of the 2,294 in attendance could see Harrisburg's starter was in terrific command, but none envisioned an explosive fifth that ultimately sealed Bouknight's gem

After Altoona countered Robert Fick's leadoff home run with a single run in the second, Harrisburg finally solved Curve starter Landon Jacobsen in the bottom of the fifth
Fick ripped his second hit to open the inning and moved to third when Melvin Dorta's squib got by second baseman Craig Stansberry
After Jacobsen got Alex Escobar to pop up, Stearns, now faced with a perfect hit-and-run setup, allowed hot-hitting Kory Casto to choose his pitch
Casto selected Jacobsen's lazy 1-1 curve and slammed it for a three-run homer to left-center field
Frank Diaz followed with a solo version that landed just left of Casto's blast

Without warning, Bouknight was starting the sixth with a 5-1 cushion

"We were getting guys on base and Casto came up big
He did a great job" said Stearns
"He's so balanced and quiet in the box and he never gets out in front of the ball
It's what big-league hitters do"

"Fick called a great game and Casto was huge
It was a great team effort" said pitcher Kip Bouknight, who retired 14 straight at one point and snared a certain Brett Roneberg single in the sixth
Roneberg was 0-for-4, snapping the Curve left fielder's 13-game hit streak

"You can't always gauge a pitcher's performance on wins and losses, but you just have to keep giving your team chances to win" said Bouknight (2-2)
"That's what I try to do every time I go out there"

The Senators (18-14) added a single run in the seventh as Casto drew a leadoff walk and advanced on Curve reliever Jorge Vasquez' second walk, this one to Josh Whitesell
Minutes later, Casto raced home on back-to-back wild pitches from Vasquez, who bagged three errant throws on the evening

Earlier in the top half, Altoona (19-13) briefly pulled to within 5-2 on Milvar Reyes' second RBI single of the game

The Curve, held hitless over the final two innings by Beltran Perez, lost for the fifth time in six games
Beltran absorbed two walks and struck out two

Harrisburg, which welcomed three hits from left fielder Jesus Feliciano, has won three straight and improved to 15-4 at home

Notes
SS Ian Desmond, who missed three straight games with a lower back strain, was placed on the disabled list yesterday, retroactive to May 6
Desmond's roster spot went to Marcus Yepez, a switch-hitting infielder from Potomac
Yepez appeared in 28 games for Washington's Class A affiliate this season, hitting .237 with three home runs and 15 RBI
RHP Justin Echols returned from triple-A New Orleans yesterday
Over the weekend, Echols won an emergency start for the Zephyrs, allowing four hits and three earned runs in five innings
He is slated to start Harrisburg's 7.05pm start at Akron Friday
C Salomon Manriquez (hamstring) missed his third straight game
Fick, his Senators rehab assignment (elbow surgery) now 12 games old, hit the last of 11,113 home runs at historic Tiger Stadium on Sept. 27, 1999
Detroit's backstop belted an eighth-inning grand slam off Kansas City hurler Jeff Montgomery that nearly cleared the right-field roof

Senators stop Curve

Back-to-back blasts by Kory Casto and Frank Diaz keyed a fifth-inning rally to lead Harrisburg past Altoona, 6-2, on Tuesday at Commerce Bank Park

Casto broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth with a three-run homer that cleared the fence in left-center after Robert Fick and Melvin Dorta started the inning with consecutive singles
Diaz followed Casto's dinger with a solo bomb, extending the Senators' lead to 5-1

The Senators (18-14) had solid production from the top of their lineup
Fick had an excellent night as the leadoff man, with a homer in the first as he went 2-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored and a stolen base
Dorta also had a multi-hit night as he contributed a pair of singles

Kip Bouknight (2-2) tossed seven innings and allowed two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out seven for the win

Beltran Perez pitched two scoreless innings to close out the game, fanning two

Altoona (19-13) briefly tied the ballgame in the second when Adam Boeve led off with a double and scored on Milver Reyes' single

Reyes finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI's

Curve left fielder Brett Roneberg saw his 13-game hitting streak snapped as he went 0-for-4 with a strikeout

Landon Jacobsen (4-3) suffered the loss as he gave up five runs on nine hits and three walks over five innings, striking out three
