Game Reports
The Altoona Curve took their third game in
a row from the Erie SeaWolves on Wednesday night, by the score
of 11-5
Altoona trailed on four separate occasions, and capped their final
comeback with a seven-run ninth inning that propelled the Curve
to victory
On night when the Curve
collected a whopping seventeen hits, Brett Roneberg paced the
Altoona offense, going 5-for-6 on the night with three runs scored
The SeaWolves struck first on Wednesday night, scoring a single
run in the bottom of the first without collecting a hit
Erie manufactured the run with a walk, stolen base, error and
ground out to take an early 1-0 lead
In the top of the third, the Curve's Rafael Alvarez continued
his recent hot streak with an RBI double to left field that plated
Simon Pond and knotted the score at 1-1
In the bottom of the frame, Erie would once again score a single
run and take a 2-1 edge, but an inning later the Curve would respond
and tie the game for the second time
Brett Roneberg started
the fifth inning rally with a single, and after a walk and an
error, Adam Boeve grounded out to chase him home and make the
score 2-2
The sea-saw battle between the divisional rivals continued in
the bottom of the inning, as Erie scored a run on a Tony Giarratano
RBI triple that made the score 3-2 in favor of the SeaWolves
In the sixth, the Curve responded yet again, this time taking
their first lead of the game courtesy of a sacrifice fly from
Javier Guzman and an RBI single from Pond that put Altoona on
top, 4-3
The lead was short-lived however, because in the bottom of the
sixth Erie got a clutch two-out double from Vince Blue that drove
in two and put Erie in front for the fourth time in the game
After matching zeroes in the seventh and eighth, the Curve bats
came to life in the ninth
The first five batters in the inning reached base and when the
frame was over eleven men came to bat, and Altoona had scored
seven times to take a commanding 11-5 lead
Jonathan Albaladejo (1-0) pitched the final 3-1/3 innings of the
game for Altoona and combined to hold the Erie offense, which
featured the rehabbing major leaguer Dmitri Young, without a hit
The Curve will take on the SeaWolves in the final game of the
four-game set on Thursday afternoon at 11.05am
Right-hander Matt Peterson (2-2, 3.58) will toe the rubber for
Altoona and will be opposed by Erie righty Scott Mathieson (2-1,
3.62)
Altoona will then return home to open a three-game series against
the Reading Phillies on Friday
Friday night will be the second stop on the Curve's Retro Celebrity
Tour as Erik Estrada will be at Blair County Ballpark to help
celebrate Cinco de Estrada

in their fourth consecutive by a final score of 11-5
Erie took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning
Tony Giarratano walked to lead off and stole second
He reached third on an error and scored on a Brent Clevlen fielders

right back in the bottom half
Giarratano led off with a single and was brought in on a Brent
Clevlen double, giving the SeaWolves a 2-1 advantage
The game would continue to go back and forth with the Curve once
again tying the game in the top of the fifth
The Wolves regained the lead in the bottom half when Vince
Blue walked to lead off and was brought in on a Giarratano triple

sixth against Brian Rogers
Rogers, who hadnt given up a run in 11.1 innings, surrendered
two, allowing the Curve to go ahead 4-3
In the inning, Altoona sent seven batters to the plate, and five
reached on hits
The highlight on the inning was when Garth McKinney threw out
Octavio Martinez at home plate while attempting to score from
second
At the time it kept the game at 4-4, but the Curve would take
a 5-4 lead once the inning was complete
The SeaWolves jumped right back on top in the bottom of the sixth
Dmitri Young doubled off the wall in left to lead off the inning
After Danilo Sanchez walked with one out, Chris Maples struck
out and McKinney walked to load the bases

The lead held until the top of the ninth inning
In the ninth, the SeaWolves gave up a seven-spot as Altoona sent
eleven batters to the plate
Erie would never rebound, dropping the game by a final of 11-5
The Curve offense continues to do amazing things
Altoona exploded for seven runs in the ninth inning Wednesday
night to rally for an 11-5 win over Erie at Jerry Uht Park
The Curve trailed 5-4 entering the ninth in what had been a see-saw
game, only to bust loose and beat the SeaWolves for the third
straight day
Altoona ripped seventeen
hits, seven in the ninth inning, with Brett Roneberg leading the
charge going 5-for-6 to tie the franchise record for hits in
a game
The Curve have had balance throughout the order all season and
did once again Wednesday, getting at least one hit from eight
of the nine starters
Theyve done that two games in a row and seven times already
in just 26 games
Altoona scored four runs through eight innings but came up empty
on numerous occasions, stranding ten runners
The visitors led 4-3 after scoring twice in the sixth, but Erie
answered with two runs in its half of the inning for a 5-4 edge
Adam Boeve started the Curves hit parade in the ninth with
a bloop single
Rafael Alvarez walked, then Brandon Chaves tied the game with
an RBI single
Brant Usts bloop single to center scored Alvarez with the
go-ahead run
Altoona poured it on from there
Octavio Martinez singled in Chaves and, after Javier Guzmans
sacrifice bunt, Craig Stansberry singled in Ust
Ronebergs fifth
hit of the night plated Martinez for a 9-5 lead
Simon Pond moved into a tie for the Eastern League lead with 19
RBIs as he singled in Stansberry, and Boeve closed the scoring
splurge with a sacrifice
fly that plated Roneberg
Altoona did most of the damage off SeaWolves reliever Chris Homer
(0-2), touching him up for four runs
Jonathan Albaladejo (1-1) picked up his first Double-A win with
2-1/3 innings of scoreless relief
Curve starter Mike Connolly allowed five runs - four earned -
on seven hits over 5-2/3 innings
After an 11.05am start this morning to close out the series, the
Curve will return home for a three-game series starting with Reading
on Friday night
Game time is set for 6.35pm
Altoona (18-8) won at Erie, 11-5
LHP Mike Connolly (2-2, 6.11) allowed five runs, four earned,
in 5-2/3 innings
RHP Jonathan Albaladejo (2.35) pitched 3-1/3 innings of scoreless
relief
LF Brett Roneberg (.395)
went 5 for 6 with three runs and an RBI
Just when you thought nothing worse could happen
to the Erie SeaWolves, a ninth-inning implosion by the bullpen
kept the last-place club mired in its losing ways
Altoona erased a 5-4 Erie lead by scoring seven runs on seven
hits and a walk in the ninth inning to rally for an 11-5 victory
Wednesday before an announced attendance of 1,646 at Jerry Uht
Park
Until Erie closer Chris Homer gave up six runs and lefty Daniel
Zell the last run in the disastrous ninth, the top storylines
for the Wolves (9-17) were improved production from an offense
that's been stagnant all season and the presence of Detroit Tigers'
infielder/designated hitter Dmitri Young
Young joined the SeaWolves on Wednesday for the first game of
a two-game rehabilitation assignment
Getting the start at first base and hitting cleanup, Young went
1-for-4 with a double and a run scored
Young struck out once and had two of Erie's four errors
"Just seeing a few pitches is all I need to do, just see
live pitching" Young said
"I wanted to come down here because the last time I rehabbed,
it was at Triple-A (Toledo) and I don't really know Detroit's
minor league system"
Young, 32, has been on the Tigers' disabled list since April 15
with a strained quadriceps muscle in his right leg
He will handle the SeaWolves' designated hitter role tomorrow
in the final game of their four-game home series with Altoona,
then depart for Minneapolis, where the Tigers begin a three-game
series against the Twins on Friday
"I'm ready to get back" Young said
"I feel rusty, period - in the field and at the plate - but
it's not going to take fifty at-bats for me to find my stroke"
Young looked rusty at first in pregame infield drills and bobbled
routine grounders on each of his errors
In the third inning, Altoona designated hitter Rafael Alvarez
hit a foul fly near the right field grandstand that dropped behind
Young
On the next pitch, Alvarez lined a two-out, RBI double to the
left field corner to tie the game at 1
Young handled four other grounders to first, including a diving
stop of a sharply hit ball at the first base bag in the fifth
to rob Altoona center fielder Brandon Chaves of an extra-base
hit
"I played a little first base in the spring, but once the
season began, no first base at all" Young said
"Then, I'm using a new glove
The quad was the one thing I was worried about, but it didn't
stop me from going to the left, going to the right, running the
bases
It didn't stop me from playing, so we'll see how it turns out
tomorrow
I'll find out in the morning how I feel"
Young suffered his quadriceps injury on April 14 while running
the base paths in Detroit's 5-1 home win over the Cleveland Indians
He hurt himself as he was slowing down and pulling into third
base on a double by first baseman Chris Shelton
Young, in his fifth season with the Tigers and 16th in professional
baseball, missed two weeks of spring training with a strained
quadriceps muscle in his left leg
At the time of his injury, Young was hitting .219 (7-for-32) with
no homers and three RBIs games in eight games with Detroit
Young would not answer questions regarding his younger brother,
Delmon, a highly touted minor league prospect in the Tampa Bay
Devils Rays organization who plays at Triple-A Durham
Delmon Young was suspended indefinitely last week by the International
League for flipping his bat at an umpire's chest April 26 after
he was ejected in a game at Pawtucket
Delmon Young was the No.1 overall pick in the 2003 draft and Baseball
America's 2005 minor league player of the year
The SeaWolves dropped to 4-9 at home with Wednesday's loss, the
club's fourth straight and have lost five of six games to Altoona
(18-8) this season
Center fielder Vince Blue's two-out, two-run double in the fifth
inning put the SeaWolves up 5-4
Erie relievers Brian Rogers and Bobby Jones held the lead with
a combined three innings of relief
"This is kind of hard to think about, but it's like life
- sometimes you have adversity and you have to fight through it"
Blue said
"We're going through a tough time and that's just the way
the game is sometimes"
