but it wasn't enough to overcome an early deficit, falling to the Akron Aeros 8-6 on Saturday

Curve comeback falls short - lose to Aeros 8-6

Vic Buttler came to the plate in the top of the ninth inning representing the game-winning run, but flied out to end the game and strand two runners

The two teams will square off again on Sunday, April 23 in the final game of their four-game series at Canal Park at 3:05 p.m

Aeros cut down Curve

Brad Snyder's three-run homer in the third inning highlighted Akron's 8-6 victory over visiting Altoona on Saturday

The Aeros scored at least one run in each of the first five frames

After back-to-back singles by Eider Torres and Joe Inglett, Snyder slammed his fourth blast of the season to left-center field to give Akron (13-10) a 5-0 lead

Torres scored in the first as Inglett attempted to steal second, and Shaun Larkin added one in the second when he knocked in Pat Osborn with a line drive to left

After Ryan Mulhern's two-run double put Akron ahead, 7-0, in the fourth, David Wallace and Nathan Panther hit back-to-back doubles in the fifth

Pirates farm report

Altoona (Double-A, 15-7) lost, 8-6, at Akron (Indians)

RF Adam Boeve went 2 for 3 with two doubles and three RBI
DH Brett Roneberg and LF Rafael Alvarez each chipped in two hits for the Curve

SP Landon Jacobsen took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits in three innings

Aeros slow Jacobsen’s torrid start

Landon Jacobsen struggled for the first time and saw his season-opening winning streak snapped at four games Saturday
Jacobsen, who set a Curve record by going 4-0 in his first four starts of the season, allowed five runs - three earned - in three innings as Altoona lost to Akron, 8-6, at Canal Park
Jacobsen (4-1) walked the first batter he faced on four pitches and never got into a rhythm, allowing a run in the first, one in the second and three in the third
He had surrendered just three earned runs over his first four starts before giving up three Saturday

The Curve trailed 7-0 after four innings but battled make to give Akron a scare

Altoona got back in the game with four runs in the fifth and plated two more in the seventh to make it 8-6

The Aeros hung on, though, as Edward Mujica worked around two singles in the ninth and stranded the tying runs on base to earn his sixth save

Akron starter Sean Smith (1-0), just up from Single-A Kinston, gave up four runs in five innings for the win

Adam Boeve went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for the Curve,
while Brett Roneberg and Rafael Alvarez continued their hot streaks at the plate with two hits apiece

Roneberg is 7-for-18 (.389) in four games since joining the club

Boeve had a two-run single in the fifth,
while Roneberg also singled home a run in the frame and Javier Guzman drove one in on a sacrifice fly

Boeve added a run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh, and Simon Pond’s RBI groundout scored another in the inning

Akron’s Brad Snyder hit a three-run homer off Jacobsen in the third

Aeros leadoff man Eider Torres went 3-for-4 and scored three runs, while No. 2 hitter Joe Inglett was 3-for-4 and scored twice

Akron stretched its lead to 7-0 with three runs on six hits in 1+ innings against Curve reliever Brady Borner

New pitcher gets victory
Right-hander Smith receives run support in first Double-A start

Before newcomer Sean Smith took the mound Saturday afternoon for his first Double-A start, few people at Canal Park knew what to expect from the young right-hander
``Honestly, I've only seen him pitch three times in spring training'' Aeros manager Tim Bogar said
``I just know he's an aggressive type of kid who goes right after hitters''

Luckily for the host Aeros, that's all the team needed to know in an 8-6 win over the Altoona Curve

The newcomer shrugged off an uncharacteristic seven walks, no-hit the Curve through four innings, then held on through a rough fifth inning for his first Double-A win - a victory that came with the help of generous run support

``Being his first game in Double-A, he was probably a little nervous'' Aeros pitching coach Scott Radinsky said of Smith, who was called up to replace Tony Sipp in the starting rotation
``But he did a good job, especially early on
In the fifth, I think maybe the adrenaline just caught up with him a bit''

Smith joined the Aeros from high Class-A Kinston, where he was 1-2 with a 3.60 ERA in four starts
At the time of his promotion, he led the Carolina League in innings pitched (25) and was tied for third in strikeouts (23)
To keep the 6-foot-4, 180-pounder on his usual five-day pitching schedule, the rest of the Aeros' starters were pushed back a day

Smith got support from an Aeros offense that scored at least one run in each of the first five innings

After the Aeros scored solo runs in the first two innings, Brad Snyder pushed the lead to five with a three-run home run in the third inning
The hit helped him to break out of a 3-for-28 slump

``Brad's been in a funk where he's just not trusting himself'' Bogar said
``And when you're in a slump, sometimes you just press a little harder and all that does is make things worse
We've been looking at some film, trying to get him back steady again''

In the fourth, Ryan Mulhern's double drove in his team-leading 17th and 18th runs of the season

Smith cruised through his first four innings unscathed but quickly found himself in trouble
The Curve's veteran hitters not only broke up the no-hit bid but also demolished any idea of a shutout with a four-run outburst

``I kind of felt a bit out of sync from the start'' Smith said
``But I was able to use my two-seamer to get outs when I needed them''

Altoona added a pair of runs in the seventh against the Aeros' bullpen

Closer Edward Mujica came on early to pitch two innings for his sixth save

Snyder's HR lifts Aeros over Curve

Brad Snyder's three-run homer in the third inning highlighted Akron's 8-6 victory over visiting Altoona in Class AA Eastern League action

In his Class AA debut, Akron starter Sean Smith (1-0) allowed four runs on three hits and seven walks while striking out two in five innings for the win
