The 5th edition of the Major
League Baseball Australian Academy has gotten underway at the
Palm Meadows Radisson Resort on Queenslands Gold Coast
85 of Australias and Oceanias best young players (amateur
and professional) will undergo eight more weeks of vigorous training
designed to prepare them for collegiate, professional and national
team careers
Rod Carew has been on hand for the opening weeks of the Academy
coaching players in all aspects of their game
He is the first inductee of the Baseball Hall of Fame to coach
at the Academy
The National Baseball Hall of Fame recognizes the achievements
of players, managers, executives and umpires (primarily) of Major
League Baseball
He is, without doubt, a legend of the game and one of the greatest
players of his generation

Rod Carew chopped and bunted his way to 3,053 career
hits
His seven batting titles are surpassed only by Ty Cobb, Tony Gwynn
and Honus Wagner, and equalled only by Rogers Hornsby and Stan
Musial
He used a variety of relaxed, crouched batting stances to hit
over .300 in 15 consecutive seasons with the Twins and Angels,
achieving a .328 lifetime average
He was honored as American League Rookie of the Year in 1967,
won the league MVP 10 years later and was named to 18 straight
All-Star teams
He remains a national hero in Panama - his native country
