The 5th edition of the Major League Baseball Australian Academy has gotten underway at the Palm Meadows Radisson Resort on Queensland’s Gold Coast

85 of Australia’s and Oceania’s best young players (amateur and professional) will undergo eight more weeks of vigorous training designed to prepare them for collegiate, professional and national team careers

Rod Carew has been on hand for the opening weeks of the Academy coaching players in all aspects of their game
He is the first inductee of the Baseball Hall of Fame to coach at the Academy

The National Baseball Hall of Fame recognizes the achievements of players, managers, executives and umpires (primarily) of Major League Baseball
He is, without doubt, a legend of the game and one of the greatest players of his generation

Here is what the Hall of Fame web site says of him
“Rod Carew chopped and bunted his way to 3,053 career hits
His seven batting titles are surpassed only by Ty Cobb, Tony Gwynn and Honus Wagner, and equalled only by Rogers Hornsby and Stan Musial
He used a variety of relaxed, crouched batting stances to hit over .300 in 15 consecutive seasons with the Twins and Angels, achieving a .328 lifetime average
He was honored as American League Rookie of the Year in 1967, won the league MVP 10 years later and was named to 18 straight All-Star teams
He remains a national hero in Panama - his native country”
